Berlin Open RAN Working Week

On June 13 and 14, T-Labs and i14y Lab will host the Berlin Open RAN Working Week (BOWW) at Fraunhofer HHI.

We are looking forward to contributions from renowned academic institutions as well as practitioners and industry representatives in four dedicated sessions - Security, Energy Efficiency, Complexity / Conflict Management, and Future Topics.

Proof-of-Concept Spring 2023

The Innovation Cluster 5G Berlin e.V. hosted the 5G Berlin Spring PoC 2023 with guests from business, industry and representatives of the Berlin Senate Administration at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) on March 24.

As chairman of the board, Prof. Stanczak opened the event with an introduction of the association and presented the current status of the 5G testbed. He also provided insights into the project results of the successfully completed BMBF-funded project OTB-5G+ (Open Testbed Berlin 5G and Beyond), as well as an outlook on the currently running projects CampusOS (BMWK-funded) and 6G-RIC (BMBF-funded).

Five different proof-of-concept (PoC) demonstrations were presented live to the participants:

  • StaBAK – cityscape-compatible Berlin assembly variant small cell.
  • Network Management and Network Slicing – network management based on ONAP, trouble ticketing & site documentation
  • Digital twins with Instant Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) – Neural rendering of 3D scenes based on image and video material
  • LiFi for indoor applications – Optical wireless data transmission in an office environment
  • Outdoor and indoor 5G RAN – 5G data connectivity with macro cell and O-RAN small cell

A high-profile panel discussion on campus networks, Open RAN and their use in urban environments with Professor Stanczak (Fraunhofer HHI), Dr. Alexander Keller (NVIDIA), Alfons Mittermaier (highstreet technologies GmbH) and Dr. Frank Schramm (Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Operations) concluded the event.

Berlin-based Fraunhofer Institutes launch real-time 5G communications infrastructure

June 30th, 2022 – On behalf of German Edge Cloud (GEC) and the Innovation Cluster 5G Berlin e.V., the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), together with the Fraunhofer Institutes FOKUS and IPK, has put into operation a real-time capable communication infrastructure for testing industrial applications in 5G standalone campus networks. As one of the first operational distributed 5G standalone campus networks in Germany with heterogeneous radio technology, it is intended to serve as a test environment for future real-time capable edge cloud applications in Industry 4.0. In addition to industrial 5G applications, research teams will use the infrastructure to further develop network technologies moving towards 6G, especially with regard to a future open 5G/6G ecosystem.






Start CampusOS Project

February 9th, 2022 – Beginning of this year, the CampusOS project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) was launched. The goal of CampusOS is to build a modular ecosystem for open 5G campus networks based on open radio technologies and interoperable network components.

With its open and experimental test environment for 5G campus networks, the 5G Berlin innovation cluster contributes to the implementation of innovative Industrie 4.0 application scenarios.








Fraunhofer HHI and 5G Berlin operate new 5G test field in Berlin offering environment for testing 5G technologies

September 29th, 2020 – The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and innovation cluster 5G Berlin, a non-profit organization promoting innovation around 5G key technologies, are starting to operate a 5G test field. The new trial ground is located in the heart of the city in Charlottenburg in the area surrounding the campus of the Technical University of Berlin. The project partners create a publicly accessible test field where companies and research institutions get the opportunity to develop and test innovative 5G applications and products. The trial ground operates independent from commercial 5G network providers. It comprises several base stations and displays all technology components needed for testing 5G applications. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the project "Open Testbed Berlin - 5G and Beyond - OTB-5G+" (FKZ: 16KIS0979K).

The new test field aims at creating a comprehensive ecosystem for 5G applications and products. 5G Berlin member companies and participating research institutions can now benefit from attractive terms and conditions for collaborative or individual research and innovation testing. The focus is on topics such as Smart City, looking deeper into how to achieve steered traffic control with intelligent sensor technology. Another important field of research is the support of automated driving through novel assistance systems.

The test field also offers the possibility to try industrial campus networks for reliable radio-based control of industrial processes within factories. Furthermore, it serves as a development site for new network control methods that use artificial intelligence.

"The 5G test field is a great success for Berlin as a business location because it offers a solid 5G stand-alone network that does not require support from the LTE core network," says Professor Slawomir Stanczak, Head of the Department Wireless Networks at Fraunhofer HHI. "Companies and research institutions now have the unique opportunity to experiment extensively in the field of 5G technologies. By providing the test field, we want to generate essential findings to take digitization in Germany an important step forward and to positively impact our technological sovereignty".

"The joint infrastructure that has now been put into operation enables our member companies and research institutions to develop and test 5G key technologies for urban applications under real-life conditions," comments Carsten Rossenhoevel, board member of Innovation Cluster 5G Berlin and co-founder of the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC AG). "The flexible test environment operating independent from commercial networks is available to all members on an ongoing basis. It is a significant advantage for Berlin as a business location."

The test field uses 5G macro radio cells in combination with smaller radio cells for local, broadband and high-speed communication links. The radio cells use the 3.7 GHz band designed for the operation of campus networks in Germany. A transmission bandwidth of 80 MHz, beamforming and adaptive antenna technology with 64 elements, so-called multi-user MIMO, support the testing of applications with high demand concerning bandwidth and signal propagation times.

The Berlin-based company ng4T provided the 5G Core network software (5G Core). It supports application-specific quality settings, so-called network slicing, and the orchestration of network services. This allows for the emulation of multiple network instances, so that roaming between public networks and campus networks can be simulated. The integration of the core network and radio access network (5G RAN) was successfully tested with commercial end devices in view of 3GPP Release 15 SA.

USECASE Drones 5G Testbed Berlin

On January 29, 2020, the USECASE 5G Drone took place at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin.

The use of drones for fire detection enables the fire department to perform a precise analysis of the source of the fire from a bird's eye view as well as the targeted deployment of rescue vehicles to fight the source of the fire. This precise pre-analysis by the incident commander in the control center saves the unnecessary commitment of rescue forces as well as material and significantly reduces the deployment costs.

When an alarm is raised via the 112 emergency number at the fire department's operations control center, the GPS data of the source of the fire is transmitted to the drone, which is distributed across the city of Berlin on the roof of each fire department control center. The drone takes off and flies autonomously to the source of the fire. The camera in the drone transmits the live video images via the 5G mobile network to the operations control center. Here, based on the situation picture, the incident commander makes the decision which emergency forces are needed on site. Since the drone flies directly to the source of the fire, the incident commander has a considerable time advantage over the on-site situation assessment, since the emergency forces normally have to move through rush-hour traffic to reach the source of the fire. Under certain circumstances, this can save lives. 

The test flight of the drone would be conducted with 5G testbed partners germandrones GmbH and Infotecs GmbH.

Infotecs has developed a military grade encryption technology, which is particularly characterized by the low latency of video transmission over the cellular network. The video images are transmitted live with such low latency that a BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) flight of the drone is possible. This also enables the drone to be controlled via the mobile network. The encryption of the video data is necessary due to the EU Data Protection Regulation. Infotecs' technology also prevents unauthorized persons from copying the videos sent from the drone to the operations control center and distributing them via social networks, for example.

The advantage of 5G technology especially when using drones is the slicing as well as the timing.

Via timing functionality, the location of the drone in the air can be determined very accurately via the existing radio cell technology. Through the signature (SIM card) that is installed in the drone from Infotecs, a dedicated drone assignment (good drone-bad drone) can also be made.

Dedicated bandwidth is made available to authorities (police / fire department, etc.) via the slice.

Berlin 5G Week

For the first time, 5G Berlin hosted a session as part of #Berlin5GWeek, which took place at Fraunhofer HHI on November 5th. The HHI hosted the workshop "Machine Learning for 5G and Beyond". The workshop was organized by the "ITU-T Focus Group on Machine Learning for Future Networks including 5G " (FG-ML5G). The session with 5G Berlin offered members the opportunity to present their topics. One of these topics was the OpenRAN Alliance, which is committed to establishing open interfaces within a 5G network.




Establishment Innovation cluster 5G BERLIN

In September, partners from industry and research launched the innovation cluster 5G BERLIN e.V. The aim of the association is to promote innovations around 5G key technologies for urban application scenarios. The 5G BERLIN initiative promotes digitization in the capital and increases the international brilliance of the location. To this end, a test environment will be set up in order to use it for joint research projects, to test various 5G technologies and to develop new applications. Furthermore, an information network will be created as a basis for new partnerships and to support knowledge transfer. The 5G BERLIN innovation cluster thus represents a regional and supra-regional networking platform for start-ups, medium-sized companies, research institutes, universities, large companies and public authorities.

5G test field for urban applications

The 5G test field is being built on the northern campus of the TU Berlin and will serve to test 5G key technologies for urban applications under real conditions. The infrastructure comprises 5G macro cells in combination with smaller radio cells for local, broadband and fast-reacting communication links. For the realization of very high data rates, street lights, for example, are equipped with 5G technology (millimeter wave technology) and networked. The components of the 5G test field will be provided by the partners and further developed in the overall system. The 5G test field maps all relevant technology components of a 5G network and will promote the development of innovations in Berlin.
